Microsoft Lumia 950, 950 XL Flagship Smartphones Press Renders Leaked

Microsoft’s rumoured premium Lumia handsets, the Lumia 950 (codenamed Talkman) and Lumia 950 XL (codenamed Cityman), have been leaked in press renders. The leak comes courtesy one of the most reliable online tipsters Evan Blass, aka @evleaks, who posted press renders of both the Talkman and Cityman (see above) smartphones.

Neowin’s Brad Sams was the first to post a live image of the alleged Microsoft Lumia 950 XL (codenamed Cityman) on Twitter. Blass followed the tweet with press renders of both the Cityman and Talkman high-end smartphones. He said, “I see your Cityman, and raise you a Talkman.”

The first leaked live image shows the alleged Lumia 950 XL in a Blue colour variant being charged and shows the home screen of the smartphone. Some of the apps visible on the home screen include Xbox, Office suite, Flipboard, Twitter, and Skype among others.

The handset is seen featuring a Windows logo on the rear panel alongside the primary camera and dual-LED flash. The right side of the handset is seen featuring physical buttons for power, volume rocker, and camera. The front panel holds the display and the Microsoft logo branding above the screen.

The Microsoft Lumia 950 (codenamed Talkman), on the other hand, was spotted in a Black colour variant. Much like the Cityman, the Talkman smartphone features the Windows logo at the rear and Microsoft Logo branding above the display. The side panel holds the power, volume, and camera button. The rear camera on the Lumia 950 looks to be surrounded by a chrome ring with the dual LED flash. Both the Lumia 950 and 950 XL smartphones can be spotted with onscreen home, back, and search buttons.

Some of the purported specifications of the Microsoft Lumia 950 (see below) tipped include a 5.2-inch QHD Oled display; a 64-bit hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 SoC; 3GB RAM, a 20-megapixel PureView rear camera; a 5-megapixel wide-angle front-facing camera; 32GB of inbuilt storage expandable via microSD card; USB Type-C; Qi wireless charging support, and a 3000mAh removable battery.

A report emerging from Korea recently contradicted the October launch timeline for the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL smartphones. It added that Microsoft may showcase the premium smartphones at IFA in early September. Recently, a report claimed that the next flagship smartphone from Microsoft would be called the Surface Mobile.

No Windows 10 Mobile for Phones With Less Than 8GB Internal Storage

If you own a Windows Phone-powered handset and it has less than 8GB of internal storage, don’t expect it to receive the forthcoming Windows 10 Mobile software update. Microsoft has quietly mentioned in one of Windows 10 information pages that Windows 10 Mobile won’t be compatible with handsets that have 4GB of internal storage (or officially ‘at least 8GB’), irrespective of the presence of a microSD slot.

While most “modern” Windows Phone handsets won’t be affected with this hardware requirement, there are still a handful of smartphones that won’t be able to receive the update. The affected handsets include the Lumia 530, Kazam Thunder 450W, Kazam Thunder 450WL, Karbonn Titanium Wind W4, Celkon Win 400, iBall Andi4L Pulse, BLU Win JR LTE, and Yezz Billy 4.

Microsoft detailed in March that Windows 10 Mobile will be compatible with devices that have at least 512MB of RAM, and 4GB of internal storage (provided the device has a microSD card slot). But now it seems you need to have at least 8GB of built-in storage in the device. Our attempt to get a clarification from Microsoft did not bear anything meaningful as the company said it doesn’t have anything more to share as of now.

Earlier this month, smartphone manufacturer Kazam told WMPowerUser that its Windows Phone handsets — Thunder 450W and 450WL — won’t be receiving Windows 10 Mobile update because they sport 4GB of internal storage. Both phones have a microSD card slot, and support expansion up to 32GB of storage.

On its website, Microsoft noted that the Lumia 430, Lumia 435, Lumia 532, Lumia 535, Lumia 540, Lumia 635 (1GB RAM), Lumia 640, Lumia 640 XL, Lumia 735, Lumia 830, and Lumia 930 will be the “first” to receive Windows 10 Mobile software update.

Windows 10 Mobile, the edition of Windows 10 operating system for mobile devices, would release with a number of interesting features. The new OS comes with a refreshed user interface with several design tweaks, new Photos app, and a messaging client, among others.

Microsoft Surface Mobile Specifications Tipped in New Leak

More information about Microsoft’s next flagship smartphone has surfaced the Web. Yesterday, we learnt that the company is planning to host a hardware event in October wherein it will launch two high-end Lumia smartphones. Now a new report claims that the next flagship smartphone from Microsoft will be called the Surface Mobile. The leaked specifications of the smartphone are almost in line with the purported hardware specifications of the Lumia 950 XL Cityman, though it is said to come with a range of other features.

Rumours of new Lumia smartphones have been circulating since last couple of months. Many reports suggest that the company is working on two Lumia-powered smartphones codenamed Cityman and Talkman. The specifications of the phones have also been reported. Now a report on WMPU suggests the existence of one more phone (that is, if it isn’t either of Talkman and Cityman). The report, however, also adds that the Surface Mobile smartphone will come with a pen input device called “Surface Pen.”

What’s interesting is that the Surface Mobile’s leaked specification is in very similar to Cityman’s and Talkman’s purported specifications, though there are some noticeable differences. The report says that the Surface Mobile, codenamed Project Juggernaut Alpha, has a 5.5-inch display with QHD screen resolution. It is said to be powered by desktop class Intel Atom x3 (SoFIA) 64-bit processor (Talkman and Cityman are believed to be powered by Snapdragon processors) with 4GB RAM (with a variant offering 3GB RAM).

Other features of the Surface Mobile include a 21-megapixel PureView Zeiss 6-lens rear camera, and an 8-megapixel Zeiss wide-angle shooter placed upfront. The device is said to come with the S Pen-esque Surface Pen, with USB Type-C port. The device is said to have 64GB and 128GB storage options with support for microSD card to extend the storage to up to 256GB.

This isn’t the first time we have heard about the Juggernaut Alpha smartphone. Rumour has it that the phone could run Win 32 (desktop) applications as well. But there isn’t any concrete information to bank on just yet. Perhaps Microsoft also plans to launch it at its reported October event – though the report is tipping a late 2015 or early 2016 launch timeframe.
